Tesla has inked a $556 million agreement to construct China's largest grid-scale battery storage facility in Shanghai. The project, described as a "smart regulator" for urban power supplies, aims to enhance energy flexibility and reliability. Upon completion, it will stand as the country's premier grid-side energy storage station.

The Shanghai battery plant produced over 100 Megapacks in Q1 2024, each capable of delivering 1MW of electricity for four hours. These utility-scale systems are critical for balancing supply and demand, particularly amid fluctuating solar and wind output.

While Tesla faces stiff competition from domestic players like CATL and BYD, the deal marks a significant milestone in the race to dominate grid-scale battery supply. CATL, which holds 40% of the global battery market, is reportedly supplying cells for Tesla's Megapacks.
